CONTROL STARTS IN LITTLE STEPS A journey of 1000 miles starts with the first step. Don't just stand there! Do something! I can't document this statement but I believe BIG plans immobilize more people than almost any other problem. When I counsel with callers each week I find many with big plans but no respect for the small steps that will get them where they want to go. Each goal that we set has steps that we must recognize and respect. Our ability to recognize these goals and develop a plan is crucial to our success. The oldest dream I can remember is that of flying a airplane. My father had been a Navy aviation mechanic and flyer. I never tired of listening to his stories of flying. Until I was forty flying seemed like a impossibly extravagant dream and then I heard about Ultralight planes that cost only a few thousand dollars. For my 40th birthday I treated myself to a test flight in a flying parachute. I decided that by the time I was 50 I would own one of these machines. After fours years of trying to fit the $2500 cost of a used paraplane into our budget I realized there would always be higher priorities till my mid 50s. I then opened a special saving account with a discouraging $300. Each week I added from $5 to $10 and birthday and bonus money went into that account for 6 years. At the age of 51 I bought my used Six-Chuter flying parachute. The cost of a used unit had gone up to $3500 and my machine needed a few repairs but this year I was able to get in three training flights. Whether your dream is a new house, a boat, a car or a bicycle if you don't have the cash you don't have a choice. Develop a plan that lets you take bite sized steps or give up the dream. You may notice that borrowing or charging wasn't included in my options. Except for a car or home I will not embrace borrowing or charging. I support making payments in advance of a purchase rather than after. Bob Berens, Copyright Pending |
